The chant E Ala E welcomes the arrival of the sun. Like many Hawaiian chants, songs and poetry it has many hidden meanings. E Ala E welcomes a new day, a new beginning. All that has happened yesterday, stays there. Today is a new day and a chance to make things better.
The sun is caressing, heating up and bringing life to the paddlers. The paddlers are adorned in kihei, the color of the deepest ocean.
When chanting E Ala E, the chanters face the sun and only the steersman has his paddle in the water. This painting depicts the moment the steersman says “Imua!” The chant finishes with E Ala E, rise up! All the paddlers are on one side to develop unity and work together, in sync.
Clothed in the riches of the ocean experience, hand on the paddles, paddles in the water - they are connected to each other and the ocean. This is the moment they take action.
